The W140 Coupes was the 2nd and last line of luxury coupes to be designated as S-Class. It replaced the W126 Coupes in 1992 using the SEC tag but was changed to CL in 1997. This was due to the luxury coupes now being given their very own line called the CL-Class. Like its predecessor, it is a 2-door version of the W140 Sedans and also called the C140. Released in 1992, it initially had 2 models: the 500SEC and 600SEC. In 1993, their names were change to the S500 Coupe and S600 Coupe. In 1994, the S420 Coupe was added. In 1997, the CL-Class was born with new model names: the CL420, CL500 and CL600. All models were replaced in 1999 by the newest generation of the CL-Class, the W215.
