The Mercedes-Benz W124 was the 1st generation of a new class of cars, the E-Class. The E in E-Class meant Einspritzung (fuel injection) and by that time fuel-injection engines has become the standard which was what the class was to represent. It eventually expanded to represent the cars that was a step below the S-Class but better than standard family cars. It replaced the W123 models with all 3 versions, the Sedan, the Estate and the Coupe, released in 1984. It wasn't until the nomenclature change in 1993 that all W124 models got it's 'E' designation in front of its model number to indicate them all belonging to the E-Class. All models were then replaced in 1995 by the next generation of the E-Class, the W210.

estate - 230TE, 300TE, 300TD, 300TE 4MATIC

sedan (diesel) - E250 Diesel, E300 Diesel
estate - E220 Estate, E320 Estate, E300T Diesel Estate
