The Mercedes-Benz 190SL (internally named R121) was the sports car variant of the
W121 sedan. Available as both a soft-top or a removable hard-top, it's styling was similar to the
300SL but, instead of the expensive spaceframe platform, it used a modified version of the
W121's platform. It sold alongside the faster and more expensive
300SL to represent Mercedes-Benz's sports car line at the time before the line officially became the SL-Class. Both were eventually replaced in 1963 by the first SL-Class roadster, the
230SL (W113).
