The Mazda 626 was a series of coupes, sedans and hatchbacks that were produced by the Japanese automaker Mazda for worldwide export and targeted the "affordable" car market. It sold alongside the
Mazda RX-7 which targeted the sports car market. It also replaced, in 1979, the Capella / RX-2 to represent Mazda's mid-sized car line in the Japanese market.
The 626 has had five generations: the Mark 1 (1979-1982), the Mark 2 (1983-1987), the Mark 3 (1988-1992), the Mark 4 (1992-1997) and finally the Mark 5 (1998-2002). Some companies converted Mazda 626 coupes into convertibles for the US market in 1982.
