The 8 Series or E31 was BMW's top coupe and most expensive line from 1989 to 1999. While it did supplant the original BMW 6 Series (E24) n 1991, a common misconception is that the 8 Series was developed as a successor. However, it was actually aimed at a different market: the luxury coupe market led by Mercedes-Benz' SL-Class and S-Class coupes. Models include: 830Ci, 840Ci, 850i, 850Ci and 850CSi. The 6 Series returned in 2004.
