The BMW 5 Series is the mid-sized luxury car line of BMW since 1972. The 5 Series got its name by being the 5th new series after the V-8 Isetta era. The series was a purely sedan line until station wagon versions were added in 1992. It's currently in its 5th generation.
The BMW E60 Series was the successor of the
E39 and is considered the 5th and current generation of the 5 Series. The sedan versions (E60) were introduced in 2003 while the touring versions (E61) were introduced in 2004. The M5 version, a high performance sedan, was introduced in 2005. In 2007, all engines were updated along with a re-styling. The models before 2007 were the: 520i, 525i, 525ix, 530i, 530ix, 540i, 545i, 550i, 520d, 525d, 530d, 530xd and 535d. After 2007, the 525xi was renamed 525ix while 4 more models were added: the 523i, 535i, 535xi and 525xd. All models were available as sedans and most models were also available in touring versions except the 530i and 540i.
